  Focus and Mission  
 
 

California Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition) (CPL) is a joint program of the California Department of Health Services and the Public Health Institute that is focused on youth empowerment, policy and environmental change strategies, and community-based solutions. CPL’s mission is to increase healthy eating and physical activity to reduce the prevalence of obesity and chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, and diabetes.

 
  Administration and Funding  
 
 

California Project LEAN is administered by the California Department of Health Services and the Public Health Institute. It is funded by the California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California Department of Justice, Antitrust Law Section, Vitamin Case Consumer Settlement Fund and the California Nutrition Network.

 
  Local Community Work  
 
 

The Santa Barbara County Region of CPL:

 
  • Increases leadership and involvement of youth and adults in their communities to improve nutrition and physical activity environments by implementing by implementing local school or community policy. 
  • Serves as a resource to implement, monitor, and evaluate Local Wellness Policies in at least two low-income school districts, which include:
 
  • The Santa Barbara School Districts
  • The Santa Maria Bonita School District
 
  • Provides technical assistance to schooldistricts, community-based organizations and community members interested in addressing nutrition/physical activity issues to support school policy efforts.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with diabetes, obesity, and physical activity coalitions/leaders in the region, which include:
   
  • Partner’s for Fit Youth (PFY)
  • The Regional Gold Coast Collaborative (GCC)
         
 

Local Projects that are currently underway include:

 
  • Advising at least 5 student health advocates to Increase the availability and promotion of healthy foods and physical fitness in their school or community, which include:
   
  • Collaborating with Wellness councils/committees to improve school foods, physical fitness opportunities, and health education and health services on local campuses;
  • The development of a student-led school garden and environmental horticulture program; and
  • Challenging students to commit to be physically active through the Governor’s Challenge Competition.
