Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
The Sexual Assault Response Team
(SART) is a coalition of 19 public and private community agencies
that serve victims of sexual assault. Trained Interview Specialists
from CALM, CWS and law enforcement conduct forensic interviews.
Medical-legal exams, when authorized by law enforcement and within
72 hours of the assault, are performed by specially trained Sexual
Assault Nurse Examiners on victims 14 years and older, and by
pediatricians on victims younger than fourteen. Treatment options
include pregnancy prevention, STD prophylaxis and follow-up examinations.
HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is available to victims who
have had high-risk exposures related to their assault. Victims
are accompanied by, and receive continued support from, Rape Crisis
Center advocates and counselors. Referrals are made to the Victim
Witness Assistance Program to support the victim throughout the
criminal justice proceedings. The first steps to take in assisting
victims of sexual assault are to call the appropriate law enforcement
agency (based on the jurisdiction of the crime), and to call a
Rape Crisis Center to support the victim.
