Maternal Child Health (MCH)

The Maternal Child Health (MCH) Program assesses the needs of women, infants, children and adolescents, and coordinates and plans programs & services for this population. The program has the following focus:

  • Provide mothers and children (especially those with low income or limited availability to services) access to quality maternal and child health services.
  • Reduce infant mortality, incidence of preventable diseases and handicapping conditions among children.
  • Promote the health of mothers and infants by providing assistance with access to prenatal care for low-income, at-risk pregnant women, and to promote the health of children by providing assistance with access to preventive care for low-income children.

ADOLESCENT FAMILY LIFE PROGRAM

COMPREHENSIVE PERINATAL SERVICES PROGRAM (CPSP)
CPSP is an enhanced Medi-Cal perinatal program available via state-approved providers only. Support services include psycho-social, nutritional, and health education assessments and intervention, and referrals along with prenatal education classes.

FETAL INFANT MORTALITY REVIEW TEAM
A team comprised of members from Santa Barbara County which reviews fetal and infant deaths in order to assess the quality of health services and to identify system gaps

PERINATAL OUTREACH & EDUCATION
Provides outreach and education to pregnant women regarding the importance of early prenatal care. The program emphasizes abstinence from tobacco, drugs and alcohol, and provides pre-conception information for those not yet pregnant.

PRENATAL CARE GUIDANCE PROGRAM
Assists Medi-Cal eligible pregnant women with prenatal care. The program offers help finding a doctor or clinic that will give complete prenatal care and will arrange for delivery of the baby. The program can assist with application to Medi-Cal for pregnancy-related services, and helps women get food supplements through the WIC program.

PHN VISITS TO CHILDBEARING WOMEN AND CHILDREN
Public Health Nurses make home visits to low income, at risk women of childbearing age, infants and children. Services include health assessments and referrals for prenatal, medical and preventive healthcare.
