Child Health and Disability Prevention Program: CHDP

The Immunization Schedule

What is the CHDP Immunization Schedule?
The CHDP Program follows the same schedule of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). The "Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule-United States", lists the names of the vaccines and the times these shots should be given. It also tells parents when to get "catch-up" immunizations when children have missed or have not had doses at the age in which they should have had them. Click here for Immunization Schedule.

What are the diseases that the immunizations prevent?
They are polio, diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), hepatitis A & B, infections from the Hemophilus influenza B & pneumococcal bacteria, chicken pox (varicella), measles, mumps and rubella (3 day measles).

There are a lot of vaccinations recommended; are they all required?
Schools will not let children come on campus if they have not had many of these vaccines. Sometimes, there are reasons not to give a vaccine. This should be discussed with your CHDP health professional. You can also view other immunization sites to obtain more information. We suggest starting with the American Academy of Pediatrics website

What are the risks of immunizations?
Each type of vaccine has its own risks; most of them are very small. The CHDP Program has looked at all childhood immunizations and have chosen the ones that they believe are safe and will work to prevent serious childhood diseases. The health professional doing the CHDP Examination must give the family information about immunizations at every visit. If a family has a question, it should be answered before a vaccine is given to the child.

Do the recommendations change?
Yes. New vaccines or better ways of giving old vaccines are being developed. The CHDP Immunization Schedule is updated annually. Your CHDP healthDecember 18, 2003 To view the current National Immunization Program Childhood Immunization Schedule, click here .
