With respect to exercise, 46% of our adults reported that they do not think they get as much physical activity or exercise as they should. Almost a quarter of adults said they never do any vigorous activities that cause heavy breathing or increased heart rate for at least 20 minutes. Almost a quarter of adults rated their level of physical fitness as fair or poor. Given the exceptional environment provided in Santa Barbara for opportunities for exercise year-round, and the benefits of exercise for improved cardiovascular health, reduced osteoporosis, improved mental health, and so on, these findings are less than desirable.

Overall, how would you describe your physical condition and fitness level?
Almost one quarter of adults rated their level of fitness as either fair or poor.

Would you say that in general your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor?
Hispanic respondents tended to rate their level of fitness as poorer than non-Hispanic respondents.
