In its broadest sense, environmental health comprises aspects
of health, disease, and injury that are influenced by factors
in the environment. Environmental factors play a central role
in the processes of human development, health, and disease. Human
exposure to hazardous agents in the air, water, soil, and food
is a major contributor to increased morbidity and mortality.
Given
the importance of the environment on human health, the protection
of the environment has long been a mainstay of public health.
Public health efforts to ensure clean air and safe guard food,
water, and sewage have contributed substantially to improved health
and quality of life in the United States.
When
Santa Barbara County residents were surveyed about environmental
concerns, 33% of respondents indicated they were very concerned
about pollution affecting the health of county residents. Respondents
were also asked about their concern about children's exposure
to toxic chemicals in the environment with 79% reporting they
were very concerned.
