Diabetes is the 8th leading cause of death locally and in California. Rates are higher in certain ethnic communities. Diabetes, if unmanaged can cause blindness, kidney failure, circulatory problems and death. It may go without symptoms in early stages. It is manageable through dietary management and medications. Many of the long-term complications can be delayed or avoided.

For every two people who identify themselves as having diabetes, one person has diabetes and doesn't know it. That means that about 10,000 people in our county have undiagnosed diabetes.

The Public Health Department offers a specialty clinic for diabetes. Our nutritionists work to educate our patients to manage their diabetes and avoid the serious health consequences it can bring.
