Communicable enteric (intestinal) illnesses continue to be a persistent
problem in our communities. With a more global food supply, there
is a greater risk of foodborne sources contributing to these diseases
and their spread. Understanding safe food preparation, handling,
and storage is key to preventing foodborne illness whether in the
home or in a food establishment.
E-coli
cases continue to be of concern. Although the number of cases is
small, E-coli is a potentially fatal disease. E-coli and other enteric
and foodborne diseases require prompt response to limit their spread
to others.
The
Public Health Department has a response team on 24-hour call to
investigate these disease outbreaks. We have implemented a FAX broadcast
system to rapidly inform community health care providers of foodborne
illness outbreaks so they can increase their surveillance and response.
The PHD participates with state and federal health authorities to
investigate, respond to, and track these outbreaks.
