Children's Dental Disease Prevention Program

"Smile In Style"
Senate Bill 111 Fact Sheet

Implementing a Dental Disease Program in the classroom

The Children's Dental Disease Prevention Program in Santa Barbara County began in July 1, 1980, with funds from the State Department of Health in an attempt to address the problem of dental caries and periodontal disease affecting 95 percent of California's children. Enacted by California Senate Bill 111, the program provides for education and disease prevention practices in the classroom for children in preschool through sixth grade. The program provides services to public schools that provide federal free and reduced lunch.

Designed as a collaborative effort between local public health departments and school districts, the program features the following components:

  • Two classroom education presentations for children by project staff on dental health, nutrition concepts and skill building sessions on hygiene techniques
  • Teacher training on dental hygiene techniques, dental health and nutrition
  • Daily "dry" brushing and flossing
  • Daily fluoride tablets (with parental consent) except in water districts with the optimal level of fluoride
